02The system

A kitchen exhaust is a system, not a fan.

Most problems on site come from designing one part at a time. I design the whole loop so the numbers agree with each other.

A roof supply fan brings make-up air back into the room.   1. Roof discharge. Vertical, at velocity, and clear of air intakes, openings and boundaries, so neighbours and your own supply fan don't breathe it.
  2. Exhaust fan and grease duct. Duty set from the real duct route: straight runs, bends, filters and the exit, not a guess off a catalogue.
  3. Canopy. Sized to the appliances under it, their type and rating, with the overhang and mounting height the Standard asks for.
  4. Make-up air. Every litre extracted has to come back in. Too little and doors whistle, burners starve and the hood stops capturing.
  5. Room balance and comfort. Supply placed so it doesn't blow across the hood, and a check on heat, because cooking lines and refrigeration condensers heat the room fast.
  6. Interlocks. No airflow, no gas. The control logic between fans, gas valve and reset is written down, so the electrician and gasfitter wire the same thing.

    Measurements, roof layout and the manufacturer data for the real appliances replace every assumption.

  4. Issued package

    Calc note, drawings, schedules and the compliance matrix, checked independently before it leaves.

  5. Contractor support

    Answers to tender questions and RFIs, and review of the contractor's submitted equipment.

05Getting started

What helps me quote fast.

Clear on scope: I do the engineering design and calculations as a mechanical engineer (MIEAust). The licensed mechanical contractor supplies, installs and commissions the system and issues its compliance certificates, and gas work is done and certified by a licensed gasfitter. Where a job needs certification or sign-off from a registered practitioner, that is coordinated with one, and I tell you upfront when it applies.
